The active ingredient in the spray tanning solution is called
Dihydroxyacetone [DHA].
DHA is a simple, non-toxic sugar carbohydrate
often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane.
DHA was approved by the FDA in the 1970’s and was added to the list of approved cosmetic ingredients. It is found in numerous make-ups and lotions.
DHA does not damage the skin, and is considered a safe skin coloring agent and nutritional supplement. DHA only penetrates the first layer of skin, mixing with the amino acids and protein and produces a tan color on these skin cells. Since that top layer naturally exfoliates off, a spray tan can only last 7-10+ days.
This process only afftects the top layer of the epidermis unlike UV exposure which reaches into the bottom layer and can permantley damage the dermis, causing burn, aging, wrinkles and skin cancer.
